PAPAKURA TOWN BOARD
The Papakura Town Board met on Monday evening, Mr. James McCall presiding. Capfkin Feldon, sculptor, wrote acknowledging the board’s instructions to proceed with the renovating of the war memorial at a cost of £ls, and suggested that as the statue had got into a rather bad condition through being neglected so long, he would be prepared to keep it in thorough order for £2 per annum. The board decided to accept tlie offer. Residents of the railway cottages are to be informed that ashes are available for their footpaths, and will be carted at the board’s expense. The secretary of the Papakura Town Band, in a letter to the board, asked permission to attend the next meeting for the purpose of obtaining some reliable information as to the ownership and control of the band headquarters. The band is to be allowed to state the case at the next board meeting. The question of having an official opening of Papakura’s portion of the concrete road was referred to by Mr. W. C. Wood, who recommended something in the nature of an official opening when tne whole stretch from Otahuhu to Papakura was finished, or from the Harp of Erin, and to get in touch with other local bodies with the idea of a combined affair. The matter was eventually left over till next meeting. The chairman reported that the committee set up to improve “Kirk’s Bush Scenic Reserve” had done very good work. The Soldiers’ Memorial is to be further improved by having the footpath at the approach kerbed and channelled. On Mr. McEntee’s suggestion that the whole of the Great South Road outside the business area, and the Opaheke Road from Onslow Street to the Great South Road be put in order and tarred, the Works Committee was instructed to table a report on the matter at the next meeting.
