Zane Grey's Yacht Stranded. —Mr. Zane Grey’s yacht stranded on Saturday at Ranjiron Island. The vessel was refloated off the reef and was found to be not badly damaged.—A. and N.Z. Malicious False Alarm.—A false alarm was received by the City Fire Brigade at 9.52 p.m. yesterday. The call came from the box at the corner of Eden Terrace and Virginia Avenue. Free School Books. —Provision for free books to the parents of school children, in indigent circumstances, does Hot apply to stationery. The department has advised the Auckland Education Board of this. Approval of dictionaries being included among free books is given. Australian Federal Grants.—At a conference of the Premiers of the various Australian States, preliminary to the Federal and States financial conference, it was decided that the States should work together in order to secure amounts equal to £ 8,000,000 which were lost to the States by the withdrawal of the per capita payments. N.S.W. Film Tax.—The representatives of large film distributors in Nev South Wales have applied to the act-ing-Chief Justice in. the High Court, in Chambers, for an injunction to restrain the Government from levying or ollecting a tax on films exhibited. A ’eclaration is also sought that the Acl nder which the tax is colletced is : valid. Soldiers Shoot Dancers.—A message —om Porto Alegre, Brazil, says that . detachment of soldiers were refuse admission to a ball at Monohay. Th soldiers fired upon dancers, and killeo 11 people, mostly women and children and wounded 27 others. The men who were alleged to be responsible for the outrage have been arrested.—A. and N.Z.
