“HAEREMAI!”

DELEGATION WELCOMED “A NEW ONE ON THEM” (From Our Resident Correspondent.') WELLINGTON, Monday. Members of the British motor-trade-delegation were described to-night as "the rangatiras in the tribe of British trade.” Mr. G. H. Scott, presiding at the dinner, said it was only right that, regarding them as such. New Zealanders should greet them in characteristic language. He therefore extended the hand of friendship, and called: “Haeremai! Haeremai!” Sir Archibald Bovd-Carpenter was compelled to admit that this was a new one on him. Mr. Coates took up the spirit of this comparison, and said he had difficulty in impressing the people in England with the difference between the native and the Maori. I am a native of this country,” he said, “and as I could not convince the people at Home of the difference, I was called a Maori.” He reminded the delegation that it was just as well it did not come out in the days of our childhood, as Maoris would have opened their hearts and ovens, particularly their ovens, and given them a greater welcome even than was extended at this juncture.
