RACING

Nassau Filly Mr. A. Potter, of Hastings, has secured on lease from Mr. R. J. Harper, Feilding, a rising three-year-old filly by Nassau—Culross, which he will shortly be putting into training for racing in the spring. Erratic One Comedy Prince will bo given an orating at the Hawke’s Bay meeting next week. He is doing all that is required of him, and his efforts over the battens are very pleasing. He should be prominent in his next race if caught in the right mood. Winner In Queensland Dudley, a full-brother to Tiega and Killoch, was amongst the winners last month at the Queensland Turf Club’s meeting. The event secured by the Hastings-bred gelding was a Novice Handicap of nine furlongs. First Time - Over i Nukumai, Landbird, Master Lupin, Liberator, Bercola, El Gallo and Maunga are horses who won a steeplechase at the first time of asking. Beau Cavalier has won both a hurdle race and a steeplechase at Ellerslie on the j same day, and Audax won both over hurdles and fences during a Grand National meeting at Riccarton. Slightly Wrong Says a Taranaki writer: “Waioeka Jack was quite twenty lengths ahead of his opponents at one stage of the Greenlane Steeplechase, and he looked a certainty when he lost his rider on top of the hill in the last round.” The writer was always under the impression that Waioeka Jack finished second in the Greenlane Steeplechase. Still Alive A report came through to Christchurch last week that Frisco Mail had heen destroyed. However, the report was without foundation, though it may be mentioned that it will be a long while before he is able to race again. Frisco Mail broke down so badly at Dunedin that the statement that he had been destroyed was accepted without question by the racing fraternity. Drink Did It In the Maiden Handicap at Tattersail’s races, Brisbane, W. Bushell weighed out 61b overweight for High Justice. When the rider weighed in he was 7 Jib over. He admitted taking a drink of water after weighing but. The stewards reprimanded him. King’s Cup During his visit to Victoria the Duke of York was responsible for christening a juvenile thoroughbred. When trainer L. J. McCann purchased the yearling son of Woorak and Golden Beauty for 1,700 guineas last March lie was acting on behalf of Mr. McDermott. and that owner asked the Duke of Yoi'k to suggest a name, which he did by choosing King’s Cup for the young-’un, which has been bestowed upon him. Many Dead Horses Probably never before in the history of New Zealand racing has there been so many valuable horses destroyed in such a short space of time. Within t.he last three weeks eight had been destroyed as a result of injuries received in races, but when old Tigerland broke his stifle at Dunedin on Saturday Week he made the ninth victim within 21 days* Somehow or other there seems to be a hoodoo on our jumpers at present. Wellington Programme The programme of the Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting is now available, the days being July 12, 14 and 16. There is no material change as compared with last year, the Wellington Steeplechase of l,ooosovs. being t.he principal attraction of the first day, the Parliamentary Handicap of 500sovs. of the second day, the Winter Hurdles of l.OOOsovs. of the last day. Nominations for all events close on Monday. June 20. To Live In Luxury It is. announced that Income lias run his last race, and that he is now to retire to a special paddock on liis owner’s farm. The spot where this once good horse is to spend the rest of his days in ease and luxury has long been awaiting the Guianforte gelding. It is good to learn that a horse that had rendered his owner such good service in the past is to be allowed to live in comfort for the remainder of his days. Napier Park There will be racing at Napier Park (Greenmeadows) next Saturday. A further stage in the fixture will be reached this evening upon the closing of acceptances. Next week there will be racing at Hastings on three days—the Hunt Club’s fixture on Wednesday, and the Jockey Club’s winter gathering on Friday and Saturday. Nice Team At Wanganui. W! H. Dwyer has got another nice team together, and it will occasion little surprise if he does not get one or two winners home during the spring. His string comprises Kiosk, Bank Note, Paleta, Star Area, Limosa, and the half-brother to Valicare by Humbug. It will be interesting to see how the Leighton colt Paieta shapes as a three-year-old. The colt by Humbug from Courante was secured rather cheaply at the Sydney sales and in the hands of W. Dwyer it will not be the trainer’s fault if the colt does not develop into a good winner. Going To Top Gallant Two New Zealand brood mares will be shipped this week to Australia to be mated with the imported horse Top Gallant, now doing stud duty at Mr. A. P. Wade’s Borambila Stud Farm, Victoria. One of the mares to visit the speedy imported sire is Lady Isinglass (Absurd —Cowl), who comes from the paddocks of Mr. W. H. Gaisford, best known in sporting circles as the owner of the crack three-year-old Commendation. The other is the South Islander. Purple Lilac. b3 r Martian from the imported mare Persian Lilac. Both are at present in foal to Royal Divorce. They leave by the Moeraki on Saturday next.
