Smart “Woman” Who Was Man
Detectives ’ Surprise For some days Detectives O’Keeffe and McPhee have been looking for an alleged woman thief, says the “Melbourne Herald.” They searched “her” room and found a vast amount of powder and rouge and lipstick. They found other things that surprised them. Last night they made an arrest and found that the suspect was a man. No man had ever in their experience looked so much like a woman. He was wearing snake skin shoes, silk stockings, and the latest creations from Paris. Under his smart little toque he was wearing a bobbed wig. The man was arrested in one of the city streets. When the detectives stopped him he was carrying a pair of field glasses worth £2O. It took all their courage to risk suggesting to him that he was not a young lady of. fashion coming home from the races. » They took the field glasses that they suspected were stolen, and then they took their man to a pawn shop, and, it is alleged, recovered two suit cases containing men’s clothing. The detectives believe that two men have been working for some time as a man and a woman. They hope to clear up a number of suburban robberies. The shirts in the suit cases were marked “J. S. Weir” and “J.S.W.” was marked on the suit case. They are anxious to communicate with the owner. At the watchhouse Francis John Smith was charged with having been in unlawful possession of a quantity of goods.
