TRADE WITH AMERICA

BIG ADVERSE BALANCE VIEWS OF MR. COATES ( From Our Resident Correspondent. ) WELLINGTON, Monday. “While we get on splendidly with America, we have to remember that trade with the United States of America is five times against us,” declared Mr. Coates to-night. “This is a difficulty, and a very real one, and if for no other reason, it must be recognised that we cannot go on at this rate. We want to do business with those who do business with us. We want to get our trade balance right. If the money goes into Great Britain, they wiM have so much more money to buy our primary produce.” As an illustration of the adverse balance, the Prime Minister quoted figures showing that 56 per cent of the motors imported into New Zealand were from America, and 43 per cent from Great Britain, including Canada and Australia.
