OUR NATIONAL LIFE
WOMAN'S PART ADDRESS TO GIRL GUIDES That it was the womanhood of a nation that raised the national life to its highest plane was the contention expressed by the Rev. D. C. Herron, M.A., M.C., in his address to the Auckland Girl Guides on the occasion of their annual church parade at the Town Hall yesterday. He urged them to remember that what they were to-day New Zealand would be to-morrow, for girls were as truly the makers of a nation's future as boys. Courage, he concluded, was necessary to adhere to a Guide’s principles, but courage was the virtue which had made the Apostles of Christ conspicuous. If they could not stand out by themselves when they were among those whose ideals were not theirs, then they would never accomplish anything. The service was presided over by the Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, and there were also present the Rev. T. W. Vealie, who said the prayers, and the Rev. J. N. Beaufort, chaplain of 11.M.5. Philomel, who read the lesson. The ceremony was opened with a procession of troop-leaders bearing colours down the aisle of the hall, the colours being deposited on either side of the platform. Tailored skirts show a novel feature in the matter of cut They come well above the normal waistline, this being marked by a narrow belt; and stand up over the blouse. Some of these high-waisted jupes actually button on to the corsage. Quite “in the picture'’ with a period frock is the waistline that is girdled by a ribbon sash. But howsoever caprice may vary in this direction, the rule for “hips” stands firm. Hips are all to be closely swathed this year. Wherever else the new fullness is introduced it must not be anywhere near the hips.
