TAUPO RAILWAY
The Minister of Public Works received a deputation on Saturday from the Rotorua-Taupo Railway League urging the construction of the line. Introducing the deputation, Mr. F. f! Hockly, M.P., pointed out that 15 months ago the Prime Minister had promised that the men at Taneatua should be put on the work, but nothing had been done.In the course of his reply the Hon. K. S. Williams considered the building of the railway a sound proposal. He also recognised ,the value of the pumice country. He would do his best to have a sum of money set aside so that a start could be made with the work when the men at Taneatua were finished. AVONDALE RACECOURSE Notwithstanding hindrance by bad weather the big scheme of improvements on Avondale Racecourse is approaching completion, and before long the district will once again be in a position to enjoy the excitement of a race meeting. TAURANGA HARBOUR BOARD The ratepayers in the Maketu and Te Puke ridings, for a long time have felt that they are unfairly handicapped in the matter of representation on the Tauranga Harbour Board. This constituent part of the district is attached to the Te Puke Town Board, the residents of which register their votes under the universal franchise, while the ridings are under the county franchise, hence the town board can dominate the election. At a meeting of delegates from the Farmers’ Union it was decided to bring the matter to the attention of the Minister of Marine, and recommend that the following suggestions be carried out: No. 1 district to be represented by one member, who would be elected b> the electors in the Te Puke Town Board area only, under present system of franchise. No. 2 district to be represented by two members who shall be elected by the ratepayers in the combined districts of Maketu and Te Puke ridings.
