NEW ZEALAND GOLFERS AT ROSE BAY
QUALIFYING ROUNDS NEW SOUTH WALES TITLE By Cable. — Press Association.—Copyright SYDNtEY, Sunday. At the Rose Bay links yesterdav, in the qualifying rounds of the New South W ales amateur golf championship, the weather was fine, but a disconcerting wind prevailed, and the greens were tricky, with the result that the scores were only fair. The New Zealanders generallv again performed well. A. D. S. Duncan made an indifferent start, and took 43 to go out, but he played splendidly coming home, and completed the round in 80. In the afternoon he was out in 3S, and home in 40. His grand t “ 1 158, which gave him third position. T. H. Horton also had a bad start, but finished in great style, for a similar morning score of 80. In the afternoon he returned a well-played card of 79. His play was marred by only one poor hole, a seven at the thirteenth. E. M. Macfarlane played steadily for two rounds of 83 each, and has tied with five others for the last three places. L. Quin was playing good golf through the greens, but for once his putting deserted him, and he finished outside the qualifiers with 82 and 86. Dr. K. Ross was never going well, and was well back with 89 and S 7. Ivo Whitton, of Victoria, was in fine form, and finished .with 79 and 77, which headed the list. Murdoch, with 77 and 80, was next. The following are the names of those who qualified: Whitton, Victoria, 156; Murdoch, New South Wales, 157; Duncan, New Zealand, 158; Horton, New Zealand, 159; Harrison, New South Wales, 159; Russell, Victoria, 159; Nigel Smith, New South Wales, 160; Sturrock, New South Wales, 162; Thorn, New South Wales, 162; Wines, New South Wales, 162; Coonan, New South Wales, 163; Morrison, New South Wales, 163; Bettington, New South Wales, 164. The- following tied for the last three places with 165 each: — Smith, Sydney Jones, Apperly, Eastway, all of New South Wales, and Macfariane, New Zealand. The draw for the first round, which will be played on Monday, is not yet available. The New Zealand players were entertained at dinner last evening, when the. Governor-General, Lord Stonehaven, presented to them the Kirk-Windeyer Cup, which they had won by defeating Victoria. —A. and N.Z. .
