POVERTY BAY NOT GOOD ENOUGH—LOST BY 14 POINTS TO 3 Press Association. •NAPIER, To-day. ITawke’s Bay played Poverty Bay here to-day in excellent weather. The ground was in fine condition, and the attendance 5,000. The Hawke’s Bay team was:—M. Brownlie, J. Swain,, J. Gemmell, G. Conrad, C. Campbell, C. Brownlie, E. Single, S. Gemmell, L. Anstis, T. Corkill, A. Macdonald, W. Huxtable. J. Blake, H. Priestly, N. Neal. Poverty Bay: A. Matthews, T. Dennis, V. Thomas, B. Morrison, fi. Webb, C. Carrington, E. Green, W. Sherratt, I. Bramwell, C. Smith, W. Langlands, V Caulton, K. Walters, R. Whatiri, R. Harrison. Within a minute of the start Hawke’s Bay had a free kick within striking distance, but Brownlie missed. A few minutes later he missed a dropkick also. The first score came about half-way through the spell, M. Brownlie, C. Brownlie and J. Gemmell breaking away with the ball at toe, for the last-named to go over under the pbsts. Corkill converted. Half-time: • Hawke’s Bay 3 Poverty Bay 0 In the second spell Morrison missed a long-range free kick for Poverty Bay. The visitors had the better of the play for some time, Caulton just missing a free-kick from half-way. Then from a scrum on the Bay line, Walters' scored, Morrison failing with the kick. Bay were not long in relying. M. Brownlie opened a rush, and made a fine run. He passed to Blake, who beat two men, passed Corkill, and scored in the corner with five men on top of him. He missed his own kick. A little later with play at the Scarlet end, Corkill landed a fine goal. M. Brownlie again opened play up. Corkill scored again, but missed the kick.
