IN MUD AND WET
League Game’s Popularity is Attested to by 7,000 Crowd SATURDAY’S GAMES REVIEWED A striking tribute to the popularity of the League code in Auckland was furnished on Saturday when 7,000 spectators, only a fraction of whom could be accommodated in the shelter of the stand, assembled at Carlaw Park to watch the clash between Ponsonby and Devonport. It was a cheerless afternoon and the later stages of the big game were fought out in an atmosphere of murky gloom, the steaming forms of the mud-spattered players being scarcely recognisable toward the end. The fans, however, were rewarded by a. game Which, without reaching any great height of brilliancy, was a dour, determined battle from start to finish, the Devonport forwards carrying too many guns for their opponents, who sustained their first defeat this season by 9 points to 6. On the adjoining area, Marist ran all over a weak City side by 33 points to 8, while at the Domain, Newton beat a much improved Athletic side in a closely contested game by 19 points to 16.
