BABY INJURED IN A MOTOR SMASH
CAR OVERTURNS ACCIDENT IN DOUGLAS ST. How easily children playing in the streets might cause a serious accident was demonstrated in Douglas Street about 4.15 on Saturday afternoon. jlf'R. B. G. WINTERS was driving his car, a five-seater Overland, down Douglas Street from Ponsonby Road, when a small boy, who was being chased by a second youngster, ran across the road, which is a fairly narrow one. In front of him. Jambing on his brakes, the driver swerved to avoid the boy. his car skidding for 40 or 50 yards. It must have been travelling at a considerable pace for the right front wheel hit the kerb and the car turned over—according to bystanders who witnessed the accident it rolled over three times and finished up on the other side of the road. Mr. Winters and his cousin. Miss Maitland, escaped with a severe shaking and some cuts and bruises, but his two-year-old son had one foot badly cut, probably by glass from the shattered windscreen, and was taken to the hospital, where he Is reported to be progressing satisfactorily. The car was badly smashed, both right-hand wheels being completely shattered and the windscreen and hood broken, as well as numerous dents In the body and mudguards.
