OVERSEAS LEAGUE
DINNER TO SIR JAMES PARR
Sir James Parr, High Commissioner for New Zealand, was entertained at a dinner on Friday last, April 22, by the Wayfarers’ section of the Overseas League, at the league headquarters, Vernon House.
Mr. William Donnet, who presided, in proposing the toast of “New Zealand,” referred to the services of Sir James Parr in advancing the interests of the Dominion.
Sir James, in responding, said that the greatest bond in holding the Empire together was the Throne, and it was interesting to note how all parties had united in extending a welcome to the Duke and Duchess of York on their visit to New Zealand. Dr. Bernard Myers thanked Sir James Parr for his address, while Mrs. Newman Fletcher, a New Zealand lady, welcomed him on behalf of the ladies present. In a few words she spoke of the pleasure it was to have Sir James present, and regretted the absence of Lady Parr, who was unable to attend the dinner, as she has not yet sufficiently recovered from her recent illness. The toast of “Success to the Overseas League” was proposed by Sir James Mills.
