Massey Memorial
SIMPLICITY OF STYLE COMMITTEE TO CONSIDER (From Our Resident Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Friday. With over £IO,OOO in hand the Massey Memorial Committee will shortly consider the style of monument which is to be erected at the special reserve at Point Halswell, the burial-ground of the late Prime Minister, W. F. Massey. Soon after Parliament meets—probably during . the first week of the session—the committee will sit at Wellington. In accordance with the special Act passed in 1925 the Memorial Committee comprises the Speakers of both the House of Representatives and the Legislative Council, the Prime Minister of the day, the Chief Justice, and a member of the Massey family. The present member is Mr. F. G. Massey, of Auckland. At the last meeting of the committee, held toward the end of last year, Mr. Hurst Seagar was asked to report upon a suitable design, and lie
later submitted the plan of a monument similar in structure to the memorial to the New Zealanders at Chan ah Bair. This will be considered by the committee, and although it is not known exactly what will be the outcome of the deliberations, it is understood that there is a general desire to have something plain—something conveying dignified simplicity in keeping with the character of the statesman whose memory it is being erected to perpetuate. Much tree-planting work has been carried out on Point Halswell in tne special reserve, and although many oi the plants are coming away with gratifying rapidity, evidence of vandalism is manifest by the disappearance of some of the shrubs planter! near the tomb.
