Mail Delivery
I RAPID GROWTH OF AUCKLAND MEANS A REARRANGEMENT OF DISTRIBUTION OF MAIL.
INVESTIGATION BY G.P.O. Another proof of the rapid growth of Auckland is the rearrangement of the distribution of mail in the suburban areas by General Pest Office delivery men. AT present an official of the G.P.O. is making an investigation of the Ellerslie district with a view to the rearrangement of the daily delivery oi mail.
It is stated that there has beer some confusion over the delivery 01 mail in the Onehunga district, where it touches on the metropolitan area. Mail from the Onehunga office is al present delivered as far as Green wood’s Corner, in the Mount Roskil district, but when the rearrangemeni is complete this area \#.ll be done bj the men from the G.P.O. Until a decision has been made and the investigations completed, no alteration will be made with the present method of delivery. One of the most rapidly growing districts is that of Mount Albert. Appli-
cations are reaching the G.P.O. from individuals in newly-formed streets to have their mail delivered to them.
This will mean the redistribution of the areas which are served by the delivery men. Ellerslie is also spreading outward, and here again the same trouble arises. Part of One Tree Hill district has been transferred to the Onehunga postal district. This was previously served by the delivery men of the Ellerslie district.
When the new arrangements are complete it would be advisable for householders to ask their friends and business acquaintances to address mail to the street, the subLirb and the delivery office of their particular area. Here is a specimen address: Mr. John Smith, 8 Lakeside Street. Mount Eden, Auckland, or Onehunga, or Devonport as the case may be. Postmen serving the metropolitan area now number 89, an increase of eight since 1925. In addition to these men there are 13 sorters working continually at the G.P.O. preparing the mail for the delivery men when they return for another load. There is no delivery from post offices in what is known as the metropolitan area, except of telegrams and parcels. Onehunga, being a separate distributing area, has seven postmen, Avondale three, Ellerslie three, St. Heliers three, and Devonport, Takapuna, Northcote and Birkenhead each have their own men.
