INTOXICATED IN CHARGE OF CAR
MOTORIST FINED £25 AND DEPRIVED OF DRIVER’S LICENCE With domestic worries the outcome of matrimonial troubles—on his mind, a man sometimes does not care what he does. TT was this feeling of recklessness ■*- probably that led to the appearance of Maurice Walter Luxford Thompson, aged 40, in the Police Court this morning Sub-Inspector Lewin explained that Thompson had had some disagreement with his wife, and tried to drown his sorrows in alcQhol. He was driving a car near Arapehui on FebrLiary 2 and crashed into another car. He was fined £lO at Dargaville early in the year for the same offence, Mr. Lewin said, and his licence cancelled. On the date of his crash he had no licence, which constituted another offence. Also he had a prohibition order out against him which brought still *a third charge against him.
Counsel asked for leniency, and pointed out that Thompson had already spent eight days in Mount Eden on remand. He was in a bad nervous state of health and the drink he had later had proved too much for him. “I’m afraid it’s not a case where I can exten.d a great deal of leniency,” said Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M. ‘‘He will be fined £25 and disqualified from holding a licence for two years.” On the second and third charges Thompson was fined 10s and £1 respectively. • Through his counsel Thompson informed the court that he did not think he woLild be able to pay the fine. In this #ase, his eight days there on remand will not end his acquaintance with Mount Eden—another month’s gaol awaits him.
