NO ONE WILL CATER FOR STUDENTS’ DINNER

CONDUCT DISAPPROVED MINISTER URGES DISCIPLINE (B'rom Our Resident Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. THERE will be no University undergraduates’ dinner in Wellington this year. It is learned that those desirous of organising this function wrote to several caterers, all of whom declined, courteously but quite firmly, to handle the job.

One caterer who had managed the function on a previous occasion was not so polite. “I will cater for gentlemen, but not for University students,” he wrote. The conduct of some University students has attracted the attention of the Minister of Education, who wrote to the Victoria College council: “Recent examples of disorder among University students at public functions and in public places have aroused a good deal of comment. It seems to be felt iu some quarters that the Government should take action. My opinion is, however, that ample disciplinary power is already vested in the professorial board of each University College to bring the students under proper control though a request from the college council that the professorial board should exercise powers with greater strictness might not be out of place.” Some members said that nothing bad been officially said about the disorders.

The chairman (Mr. R. McCallum) : e don’t need anything official. We Know what happened at Auckland. A report is to be prepared by the Professorial board.
