Fine New Wharf For Whangaroa

CONCRETE STRUCTURE WORK SOON TO BEGIN 'V7'ET another instance of the remarkable progress and development of the North Auckland peninsula in recent years is afforded in the intention of the Whangaroa Harbour Board to replace the ancient and weather-scarred wharf of timber at Whangaroa by a modern reinforced-concrete structure, estimated by the engineers, Jones and Adams, of Auckland, to cost between £9,000 and £IO,OOO.

To be erected on a site near the existing wharf the new one will accommodate vessels of greater draught than has been possible under the old conditions. The pier-head will be some 300 feet from the shore, this length consisting of an approach 200 feet long, the remaining portion providing two berths capable of accommodating vessels 100 feet from stem to stern. A width of 60 feet betwen the berths is|allowed in the plans and on this part of the structure a transit shed with cool storage for produce is to be erected. In view of the development of the big game fishing grounds in the vicinity of Whangaroa by Zane Grey’s party, this season, special consideration has been given to the accommodation of launches engaged in the sport and as the harbour is rapidly growing in popularity by reason of its scenic charm and the fishing to be enjoyed there, the facilities of the new wharf will be much appreciated by sportsmen as well as by traders. The work will be carried out by contract as soon as the board’s engineers have completed the design.
