Premier Mid-Week Bowling Trophy

THE DENISON PINS NEXT WEDNESDAY’S CONTEST (By JACK HIGH) Some three years ago Mr. Waiter Denison, the popular Dominion Koaa Club bowler, presented a set of scarf pins for competition on Wednesday afternoons during the year. The pms have the initials, W.P. (Wednesday players), with a tasteful decoration of ferns encircling them. Mr. Denison felt there were not enough interesting competitions during the week that had the character of keenness, which goes so much to develop good play and adds to the real enjoyment of the game. Since the inception of this competition there has been much emulation by competitions of & similar nature. Many clubs for instance have a Wednesday afternoon pins’ event on their list now. But, since their presentation, the Denison Dins’ Competition has always held by far the priority of position among them. The Denison Pins have always attrt.c>ed players of the very strongest order. Therefore when a team enters to dispute the right of the holders, the game can always be regarded as one of fhe highest calibre. It has been proved on more than one occasion that weaker teams have a very poor chance of ultimate Victory, and that only the best are fitted to contest. The principal rules governing the competition are:—(l) The members of a challenging team must all be members of one club; (2) no challenge is accepted from a club having a team already entered, until such team is defeated; (3) any game unfinished, owing to weather conditions, etc., must be replayed throughout; (4) the player who enters the team must skip it. THE PRESENT HOLDER At the present time, Irvine Clarke, that fine West End player, is the holder. He has been particularly successful in the competition since its inception. Among his recent victories was the defeat of Hoskings (Carlton). In this a *ch there was the liberal margin of Denison himself entered a team, first for some two and a-half years. n ‘ y *° meet with defeat by four. Last winter his play in this competition was very successful, holding them for nine weeks. J. Kilgour has a strong team entered, which includes Victor Casey as No. S. Arthur Parsons, that graceful and victorious player of many touranments. always plays to an exceptionally high standard. All these teams are very strong. In fact, in its present stage, the competition has extremely interesting features to the bowlers of Auckland.
