Deer-Stalking in the South

AN AUCKLANDER’S VISIT

GOOD SPORT IN SOUTHLAND This year Mr. Harold Thomas, an Auckland sportsman, made a deerstalking trip to Southland. This part of the Dominion has become a sportsman’s paradise in recent years, the presence of moose, wapiti and Atlantic salmon in the back country making it widely known to sportsmen throughout New Zealand, and visitors from all parts of the world. In a letter to the secretary of the Southland Acclimatisation Society, Mr. Thomas deals interestingly with his experiences in the South. In expressing himself as greatly pleased with the result of his trip to the Lake Manapouri district, Mr. Thomas says that in the early stages he was considerably hampered by bad weather, and although deer were certainly plentiful, it was ten days before he saw and shot a warrantable stag, a fair 13-pointer. On moving down to anothed block, however, the sport became much better, which was partly accounted for by the fact that the roaring was much further advanced. During the week he was on this block he bagged a rough 14-pointer, a nice 10, and a really fine 15, also a good 13, a result with which he was highly delighted. Mr. Thomas came away with pleasant recollections of the trip, and of the consideration shown to him by officials of the Southland Acclimatisation Society.
