RICHARD JOHN SEDDON
ANNIVERSARY OF HIS DEATH LOFTY TRIBUTES (From Our Resident Correspondent .) WELLINGTON, To-day. A SMALL gathering, chiefly of West Coasters, met beneath the statue of Richard John Seddon in the Parliament grounds to-day, to commemorate the 21st anniversary of the death on the Tasman Sea of the New Zealand statesman a few days after sending the historic message, “Leaving today for God’s own country.” Wreaths were placed at the foot of the statue by members of the family, and by Mr. Roderick McKenzie, as the oldest living friend of Seddon. On behalf of the West Coasters’ Association, Mr. J. J. McGrath regretted the passing of Sir James Carroll, a personal friend of Seddon. and said many of those who attended the first anniversary of his death had now gone. Mr. McKenzie said that Seddon’s administration was perpetuated on the Statute Book as an example and inspiration to the rising generation. Mr. Massey had been a worthy successor, and Mr. Coates was bidding fair to take a creditable place alongside the statesmen of the past.
