PAPAKURA BOY SCOUTS

TROOP BIRTHDAY A large gathering of parents and friends met at the Paragon Hall recently to witness the celebration of the troop's first birthday. Mr. C. S. Beechey* presided, and associated with him were Messrs. Grigs'by (Scout commissioner). Boswell (district scoutmaster), and Mead (district secretary). The Girl Guides were present, and also a troop from Manurewa. Mr. Beechey paid tribute to the present scoutmaster, Mr. H. Slessor, who had had large experience in England and Europe, and was doing wonderful work with the local troop. He mentioned that a generous friend had presented the troop with a cheque for £ 3 as a birthday gift. He also extended the committee’s thanks to all who had helped the local troop along. The programme was entirely sustained by the boys themselves, with the assistance of Miss H. Beams at the piano, and consisted of instrumental and vocal solos, vocal duets, ambulance displays, physical exercises, etc. Commissioner Grigsby congratulated the troop on its smart appearance and behaviour and especially on having such an excellent scoutmaster; he felt sure it was destined to become one of the finest in the province. He then presented Mr. Slessor with the scoutmaster’s warrant and wished him the best of luck. The enrolling of six new Scouts was a most impressive ceremony, and made a big impression on the boys and parents alike. A most interesting Scout evening closed with the National Anthem.
