“BIG CHANCE LOST!”

TOURIST LEAGUE PROTEST WOULD HAVE EARNED SALARY A strong protest against the City Council’s decision not to appoint a publicity manager was entered to-day by Mr. A. S. Blackie, Dominion organiser for the Community Tourist League. “It is most regrettable that the Finance Committee of the city should have rejected this proposal,’’ said Mr. Blackie, who also deprecated the personal tone which characterised last night’s debate on the question. Although this officer would have chiefly advertised the activities of the City Council, said Mr. Blackie, the effect generally upon the progress of the city would have been most marked. There was little doubt, following experience abroad, that this officer would have very soon more than earned his salary. The claims of the zoo, the tramways, and other spheres of municipal activity would also have benefitted considerably. In making such an appointment, Mr. Blackie, Auckland would have followed the progressive lead of cities abroad. Australia, in particular, had found this officer of inestimable value. Hints and general information conveyed from city to city per medium of their publicity officers spelt progress. “It is extremely regrettable to my mind that such a valuable opportunity for making the attractions of Auckland, and New Zealand in general, better known overseas, has been temporarily lost, or postponed.”
