PRIVATE SPECULATOR GETS IN FIRST

TAWA FLAT RAILWAY BETTERMENT PUN FOILED (From Our Resident Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Today. The announcement that £75,000 is to be spent on the Tawa Flat railway deviation is bringing many men to the city in search of work, in spite ol the statement that the work would not commence for two weeks. It is learned that the intention of the Government was to settle land along the Tawa Flat line on a scale similar to the Hutt Valley deviation. The private speculator has forestalled the State, however, and large areas of land in that vicinity have been purchased with a watchful eye to rapid development when the line goes through. ’’v The result is that the Government, although desirous of facilitating settle ment, does not feel prepared to pay the price which present holders are asking for the sections.
