NO HOME AND NO WORK
CHRISTCHURCH UNEMPLOYED MORE ACCOMMODATION (Special to THE SUN.) CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. The Salvation Army’s home is overcrowded, and there is nowhere for the unemployed to sleep. An effort to obtain the use of the King Edward Barracks was - refused. The old fire station in Chester Street it is believed, will loe very suitable as a temporary place. It is considered the authorities will secure the use of this place. Men have been unable to secure shelter during the recent bad weather. In dormitories with accommodation for a maximum of 60 men at the Army home, shakedowns have had to be arranged between the beds and on the couches of the library, as 82 were booked for last night. On previous nights as many as 80 had been sheltered. The management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union last evening offered to make a substantial grant L’om its annual charity day proceeds toi ward the relief of unemployment. This j offer was made in response to a request j for assistance from the Citizens’ Uni employment Relief Committee.
