RACING

LAST OF THE SEASON AUCKLAND MEETING MARKS END OF NORTHERN FIXTURES The winter meeting of the Auckland Racing Club, more popularly known as the Great Northern fixture, was brought to a very successful conclusion yesterday. Heavy rain fell intermittently during the preceding 36 hours, but the sky cleared before the first event, enabling the day’s programme to be conducted under satisfactory conditions. There was a good attendance for an off day. The course was very heavy. Falls in the jumping events were numerous, L. Coleman sustaining a broken collarbone, while several jockeys received minor injuries. Speculation was fairly brisk, the totalisator registering £59,943* for the day, a decrease of £12,091. The total for the three days was £226,179, compared with £ 242,302*, a decrease for this fixture of £16,123 \. Notes on the racing and details of results of the concluding events follow. Zircon’s First Zircon, making his second appearance over country, was a big favourite for the Tamaki Steeplechase with £1,809, Pendavies (£1,020) being the only other whose chances were considered. Pendavies was- always the leader, and led up to the double from Syndicate, Prince Rufus, Waiau Lad, Zircon, Cui Bono, and Rayo. On the

hill the second time Pendavies was a up to the leader down the bill, and they came to the last fence together. A good finish saw Zircon beat Pendavies by a length clear, with Syndicate 15 lengths away. Prince Rufus was fourth, and at intervals came Rayo, Waiau Lad. and Cui Bono. A protest by the rider of the second horse for interference near the finish was dismissed. Kamehameha’s Hurdles All 16 acceptors came out for the Orakei Hurdles, and in a good pool the following were best supported: Potoanui £1,472, Just John £1,006, Kamehameha £772, and Ramblin’ Kid £720. Tall Timber led at the end of seven furlongs, being first over the fence going out of the straight, his nearest attendants being Kamehameha, Rahepoto, Scot Free, Potoanui, Ramblin’ Kid and Edifice. The leader ran wide on the bend, and then Kamehameha and Potoanui cleared out from the field, the pair passing the halfmile 12 lengths ahead of Anchor, Just John, Queen Emerald and Te Tahi. In the run home Kamehameha won by three lengths from Potoanui, with Just John 10 lengths away third. Anchor was fourth, and Te Tahi, Queen Emerald, Gold Rep, Scot Free, Rahepoto and Clockwork followed. Tall Timber pulled up, and Lady Arch, Slump, Edifice and Ramblin’ Kid fell. Master Doon Easily Llandudno carried £1,684 in the York Handicap, others to be supported being Master Doon £1,125, Indian Sage £933, True Blood £ 633 and Bennanee £ 632, betting taking a wide range. King Merv, Master Doon and King Smock were in front quickly, but when they settled down Gala Day was making the running from Llandudno, Master Doon, King Merv, Indian Sage, Te Koroke. Te Kara, Yoma, True Blood, Danae, Quincoma, King Smock and Branson. At the half-mile Gala Day was still in charge, being attended by Master Doon, Charlady, Llandudno, Te Kara, Indian Sage, Te Koroke, Quincoma, True Blood, Yoma, Danae and King Smock. Master Doon led into the straight from Gala Day, Llandudno, Te Kara, Indian Sage, King Smock and Yoma, with ‘Quincoma heading the others. Once straightened up Master Doon drew out and finally won by three lengths from True Blood, with Black Mint half a length away third. Then came Te Kara. Llandudno, Gala ; Day, Indian Sage, Te Koroke, Quincoma and Income. This made S. Henderson’s second win of the day, and his sixth for the meeting to date. Tuki’s Surprise Beau Cavalier £2,583 and Kawini £1,533 were the only ones backed for the Winter Steeplechase, the winner, Tuki, carrying £268. Comical, Beau Cavalier and Llewellyn were in close order at the water jump. Kendal, Omahu, Royal Abbey, Kawini, Tuki, Glenotus, Passin’ Through, Mount Marta and Dick following in that order. The favourite went to the front at the back, but fell at the first hurdle there, leaving Comical well clear of the remainder, and he led over the hill and over the brush double six lengths in front of Kawini, Omahu. Passin’ Through, Tuki, Mount Marta,i|

r Kendal, Royal Abbey, Glenotus and Dick. Comical was lengths ahead of Kawini at the first hurdle along the back when he fell, leaving Kawini to reach the top of the bill first, where he was joined by Omahu, with Tuki rapidly making up ground. Kawini and Tuki were together into the straight, just ahead of Omahu, with Passin’ Through, Royal Abbey and Glenotus at intervals. Tuki did best from the last fence to win by five lengths from Kawini, with Omahu three lengths away. Then a long way back was Royal Abbey and then Passin’ Through, Dick, Kerndal and Glenotus. Mount Marta fell at the same fence that brought Comical down, and Llewellyn pulled up. Royal Form Improves

Only six started in the Campbell Hurdles, Day Bell £1,805, Black Cruiser £1,372 and Archibald £1,211 being best backed, but the money was fairly evenly distributed. Archbald was taken to the front immediately the barrier rose, and Rangatahi lost abov.it half a dozen lengths. Archibald was well clear over the first circuit, leading past the stands from Royal Form, Black CrLiiser, Enare and Rangatahi, who were running in fairly close order. Archibald lost some of his gear a little further on and was passed at the five furlongs by Royal Form, who passed the half-mile post half a dozen lengths in front of Enare and Black Cruiser, with Rangatahi next. Thus they came into the straight, Royal Form winning easily by a couple of lengths from Enare, who was 15 lengths in front of Black Cruiser. Rangatahi was next, and Archibald a long way back. Day Bell fell at the third fence. E. Warner, rider of Day Bell, received a cut on the chin. He was taken to hospital, where three stitches were found necesary. Hoariri’s Hat-Trick There was good betting on the Visitors’ Handicap, Hoariri £1,384, Sir Archie £1,273, Nadarino £1,194, King Emerald £1,072 and Delightment £1,023, carrying the money. York Abbey delayed the start nearly ten minutes, at the end of which they got away fairly well, Sun Up! King Lu, Nadarino, Hoariri, and Royal Blood being early conspicuous. Royal Blood and York Abbey led past the four furlongs from Sun Up, Nadarino, Hoariri, Delightment, High Pitch, Welkne and Sir Archie. Into the straight the order was Royal Blood, York Abbey, Delightment, High Pitch, Nadarino and Sun Up. At the distance Hoariri drew to the front and went on to win by a length from Delightment, with 'Sun Up three parts of a length away third. Royal Blood was fourth, and the next to finish were York Abbey, High Pitch, Nadarino, Sir Archie and Welkne. This is the third year in succession in which Hoariri has won this race. FOR SUCCESSFUL JOCKEYS S. HENDERSON’S SHARE LEADING HORSEPiIEN’S WINNINGS There were some big cheques to be handed over to the successful horsemen at the recently concluded Auckland winter meeting, and of course at the head of the list is S. His win on Beau Cavalier in the Great Northern Steeplechase was worth £135. W. Rennie was next on the list, thanks to his success on Wedding March in the Great Northern Hurdles, which earned him £126, his total being £l6O. Following is a list of fees and percentages earned by the nibst successful horsemen over the obstacles at the

The riders over' the jumps receive a bigger percentage than the riders on th'.e flat, and as it was essentially a juvnping meeting, naturally their winnings would be much more. There were no big cheques earned by successful riders on the flat.
