GROWERS IN CONFERENCE Press Association W ELLINGTON, Wednesday. The Fruitgrowers’ Conference has opened with Mr. Brash, the president, in the chair. The Hon. J. A. Young, in the absence of the Minister of Agriculture (the Eon. O. J. Hawken), attended and from figures supplied by Dr. Reakes reviewed the year, forecasting a hopeful future for the industry. Addressing the conference himself, Dr. Reakes, Director of Agriculture, saw no reason why markets should not continue satisfactory. The industry now seemed to be reaching its rightful position in the Dominion, in regard to the need for reducing the cost of the department would assist where it could, though it was more concerned with production. In view of the / recognition that the Government guarantee could not continue indefinitely, a committee was set up to put a levy in action with the object of building up a fund to. help themselves.
