POSITION OF MR. RATES
“JOB’S THERE IF HE WANTS IT” PRIME MINISTER’S REMARK (.From Our Resident Correspondent.') WELLINGTON, To-day. Although Mr. D. C. Bates admits that he is like Mahomet’s coffin, the Government is saying little to relieve the suspense as to his position as climatologist. Mr. Coates, when approached, merely remarked: “I have nothing to say. The job is there if he wants it.” It seems certain, however, that the. reorganisation of the office is awaiting the arrival of the new director, Dr. E. Kidson. It is also understood that the reorganisation of the office as recommended by the Scientific and Research Council, early in the present, year, provides for Mr. Bates continuing in office at the present salary on work affecting the past climatological records of the Dominion, and no suggestion has been put forward by the proper authorities that his services would be immediately terminated.
