A sub-committee was set up to arrange the itinerary. It was decided that the New Zealand selection committee should consist of six members, three from the North Island and three from the South Island, the chairman and convenor to be appointed by the New Zealand Union, to have a deliberate and a casting vote. The following were elected by ballot: North Island, M essrs. E. McKenzie (Wairarapa), N. AlcKenzie (Hawke’s Bay), A. Guy (Taranaki); South Island, Alessrs. A. H. Adams (West Coast), A. J. UNIFYING RUGBY A STEP FORWARD N.Z.R.F.U. PLEASED (From Our Resident Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday night. The English Rugby Union has expressed its regret to New Zealand at the fact that the proposals put furward for the formation of an Imperial Rugby Advisory Board were rejected by the International Board. In a letter received by the New Zealand Union, the English Union points out however, that two clauses adopted are practically? Pas originally suggested by New Zealand. First, that an Imperial Rugby football conference should be held at intervals of not more than three years to consider amendments to the laws of the game and ruling thereunder; second, that this conference should consider general matters relating to the game. Discussion at future conferences should be of a farreaching character and of great service to the game. “I think that is very satisfactory,” said the charman of the Management Committee of the N.Z.R.U., Air. S. S. Dean, at a meeting to-night. It was decided to write thanking the English Rugby Union for its efforts, a member remarking, when the motion was being put: "We must keep on hammering away until we obtain a proper Board of Control.”
ORDERED OFF RUGBY OFFENDERS PLAYERS DEALT WITH REPRIMANDS AND A SUSPENSION 13LAYERS ordered from the fields "*• th'e previous Saturday, including two men in the Ponsonby v. Qrafton senior match at Eden Park, were dealt with at a meeting of the Auckland Rugby Union presided over last evening by Mr. H. Frost. Offpnees, in most cases, were not serious, with one exception, cautions and reprimands meeting the charges. Mr. W. Meredith, referee in the Ponsonby v. Grafton senior match, reported ordering off V. Hargreaves, a Grafton player, and P. McCarthney, Ponsonby, for threatening behaviour. The referee stated that Hargreaves had dived at McCarthney in a line-out and had tackled him although not in possession of the ball. The latter apparently resented the tackle and had put a strangle-hold on the Grafton player. Both men were then ordered off. Mr. Meredith said that there had previously been a good deal of bumping in the line-outs, although the play had been quite good-tempered. He did not think that the incident called for stern measures. Both players attended, and although differing in regard to details of the incident, claimed that there was no suggestion of hostility in their actions. P. McCarthney stated that he tackled the Grafton man and in doing so grasped him by the head. As they went to the ground he fell on top of his opponent. “We both were very surprised at being ordered off,” said the Ponsonby player. He said that they discussed the matter quite amicably in the dressing shed, each wanting to take the blame. It was resolved that the ordering-off was sufficient, and that no further action need be taken. AN ONEHUNGA INCIDENT Mr. C. W. Schnaiier, referee in the Ellerslie v. Manukau senior B game at Onehunga, reported ordering off B. Cohen, Ellerslie, for questioning his decisions, and J. Brindle, Manukau, and D. Bunn, Ellerslie, for fighting. In regard to B. Cohen, it was resolved that a caution be administered, conditional upon the player tendering an apology to the referee for the remarks passed. J. Brindle admitted striking Dunn under provocation, and was reprimanded. Bunn, who did not put in an appearance, was ordered to stand down until he attends before the committee. A LONG SPELL On the recommendation of the junior Management Board, H. Valentine, of the Grey Lynn sixth grade team, was suspended for the remainder of the season for using bad language to a referee. An application from W. Sturmey for a transfer from the Ellerslie Club to Manukau Rovers was granted. The South Auckland Sub-Union advised that they would accept a match at Pukekohe on June 18. Technical College Old Boys wera granted permission to play the Kaipara representatives at Helensville on June 18. The chairman reported that Mr. G. Nicholson had agreed to be nominated as Auckland selector for the New Zealand team being forwarded to Wellington.
N.Z. TO MEET VICTORIA IN GOLF MATCH
KIRK-WINDEYER CUP STERN CONTEST ANTICIPATED By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright SYDNEY, Wednesday. In the first round of the elimination contests between the Australian State teams to decide which will meet the New Zealand team in the Kirk-Wind-eyer Cup match, Victoria easily disposed of Queensland without the loss of a game. Victoria then met New South Wales. Each side won two matches, but Victoria had an advantage of nine holes, and will therefore meet New Zealand in the final. Ivo Whitton, Victoria, was in great form against H. McClelland, New South Wales, and was 4 up at the ninth hole, and eventually won by 7 up. Russell, Victoria, and Nigel Smith, New South Wales, had a most strenuous match, the latter winning 2 up on the last green. Headlam’s match with Bettington produced brilliant golf. Bettington won by one' hole. E. G. Schlapp, Victoria, was much too good for Dennett, New South Wales. The results were as follow: Victoria against Queensland. —Whitton defeated Clive Boyce, 5 up; Russell defeated Dr. Boyce, 2 up: Headlam defeated Hall, 2 up: E. G. Schlapp defeated Gumming, 1 up. Victoria against New South Wales.— Ivo Whitton defeated H. McClelland. 7 up; Rfissell lost to Nigel Smith, 2 down; Headlam lost to Bettington, 1 down; Schlapp defeated Dennett, 5 up. DRAWN FIGHT
FINE MATCH AT BRISBANE McKNIGHT’S STAND By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright BRISBANE, Wednesday. . The fight between Nelson McKnight (lOst 61b) and Frank Austin (iOst at Brisbane on Saturday, which ended in a draw, was a ding-dong go from start to finish. The newspapers describe McKnight as the toughest fighter seen in Brisbane for many years. Austin is noted as a terrific puncher, and time and again he landed hard blows to the point and to the body, only to find McKnight boring in and asking for more. In view of McKnight’s inexperience his impulsiveness would have brought disaster had he been unable to take heavy punishment, because Austin smothered until the New Zealander exhausted himself, and then he made a counter-offensive. Austin brought more strategy to bear, and against a man with an ordinary jaw or midriff would have been successful.—A. and N.Z.
