ANZAC DAY WORKERS
BEFORE THE COURT (From Our Own Correspondent.) PUKEKOHE, To-day. A charge of having worked at his calling on Anzac Day, brought against a well-known resident of Pukekohe Hill, Robert Bilkey, was dismissed by Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., yesterday. The defendant in evidence stated that he was hoeing turnips when visited by the police, but was only doing so in order to fill in time before attending the Anzac service. He had retired from farming some six years ago, and had leased his farm to his son and son-in-law. Four of his five sons had served at the war and one was killed. Ernest Pollock and his employee. William Graham, were similarly charged at the last sitting of the court. As both were engaged in sowing grassseed, the magistrate held that it was necessary work, and dismissed their respective charges. Two other farmers, George Carr and George Fawcett, who pleaded guilty, were convicted and ordered to pay costs.
