ONEHUNGA JUBILEE

PLANS FOR MEMORIAL A large and enthusiastic meeting of the Onehunga-Manukuu Chamber of Commerce last evening, under the presidency of Mr. H. J. Davies, discussed the proposal to establish, in or near the main street of Onehunga, a women’s rest-room as a memorial relating to the recent jubilee of the borough. The Mayor, Mr. W. C. Coldicutt, and members of the council were present to advocate and support the project, which now promises to assume some tangible form at a very early date. Several sites for the rest were debuted, ways and means to meet the costs were considered, and a variety of motions and amendments indicated the sincerity of interest displayed by everyone present. Mr. J. E. Green, honorary secretary to the Jubilee Celebrations’ Committee, outlined the project from Jts inception, and explicitly unfolded the scheme proposed, more particularly as to how and by whom the funds could be secured. It was subsequently understood that the Borough Council would practically be ■responsible for the establishment and would exercise full authority as to its construction, costs and future management, with all habilities and responsibilities resting upon itself. Throughout the meeting not one discordant note or dissentient voice was expressed, the only point of doubt beug whether the township could, or raise the necessary quota of subscriptions toward the purchase of *and and cost of building, rii K nally it; was decided that the counrec l ues ted to consider and give ~n nlte form to the proposal, including d*5 n ?/ estimatc of costs, and general mi♦♦ Sof the rest - after which a com'voulcl be appointed from the amber and the jubilee committee to scuss advanced particulars with the i Uncil.
