BEEF-RAISING A FALLING INDUSTRY
A SERIOUS POSITION MEAT BOARD’S WARMING
(From Our Resident Reporter.) WELLINGTON, To-d,iy. the raising of beef has become X unprofitable and it is sated by the New Zealand Meat Eoard that if something is not done quickly New Zealand will soon cease to be an exporter of beef. Should this position eventuate, ft is stated it will have a very serious effect on the general prosperity of the country, and as New Zealand's beef production is interwoven with ts sheep, lamb and dairying induatrhs, it will mean that the main primary products will be checked in their de .fr lopment. The Meat Board cannot 100 strongly emphasise the gravity of the disaster if beef-raising were illovec to lapse. The seriousness of the whole position is at once made clear by the following figures showing the export of beef for recent years. The number of cattle killed in the Dominion for export (In quarters) for th'e past Ste years is as follows: Season 1922-23. 125,083 head; 1923-24, 80,707; 19 24-25, 114,637; 1925-26, 53,898; 1926-27, 30,000 (estimated).
