Rush for the Registrar
Four Hundred Couples on One Day Marriage by the registrar is becoming increasingly popular in London. Four hundred couples were married in London register offices on Easter Saturday. “We have been marrying couples every quarter-hour since 9 o’clock this morning, and shall continue at the same rate until 2.45,” said one of the registrars. "Easter Monday has never been so popular as Saturday. The majority prefer the earlier day, I suppose, to spend the holiday on the honeymoon.” At Hackney, where there were 22 marriages, the youngest bridegroom was 17 and the oldest bride 82. Her groom was 70. Church marriages during the weekend were less than 50, and to-day they will number under 30. Simultaneously, six couples were married at the Church of St. George the Martyr, Southwark. Behind them stood 25 bridesmaids.
