PALMERSTON NORTH, Tuesday, A little over a month ago Palmerston North suffered the loss of one of its licensed houses by fire and since that date business, so far as the sate of liquor is concerned, has been conducted in a temporary shed which was erected on the site. At the annual meeting of .the Licensing Committee on Monday morning formal application was made to have the license of the hotel in question—the Occidental Hotel—extended so as to carry on with the temporary premises. “What is going to be done?” inquired Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., who added that an extension would only be granted on condition that something was done. The borough council, which is an interested party in that the building and site is the property of the municipality, reported through its solicitor, Mr. F. H. Cooke, that it was proposed to offer the license for sale, it having been suggested that the site should be devoted to a public library. Senior Sergeant O’Grady was of the opinion that while the present premises were satisfactory in the meantime, they could not so continue for long, and it was decided by the committee to meet the position by extending the license until the next quarterly sitting in the hope that something definite would be done in the interim.
