A SHAME TO TAKE THE MAN’S MONEY
PLAUSIBLE CELESTIAL WINS BENCH’S PRAISE (.Special to THE SUN.} -WANGANUI. To-day. Chong Hing, a disciple of Confuscious, put up a pretty good defence when charged in the Magistrate’s Court with failing to close his shop at 1 p.m. on the weekly half-holiday, so much so that he received a rather back-handed compliment from Mr. J. S. Barton, S.M., who said Chong had carried his defence further than the others charged with the same offence, and it seemed unsportsmanlike to punish him for lying so ingeniously with a pleasant smile. However, the law had to be obeyed by East as well as West, and a flue of £3 with costs would be imposed.
