“NOT ON OATH”
CRITICISM BY COUNSEL PROBATION OFFICERS’ REPORTS
(Special to THE SUN.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Mr. B. J. Dolan in the Magistrate’s Court this morning had something to say about the reports of probation officers, when he was appearing for an accountant who was charged with obtaining money and goods by means of valueless cheques. “I understand,” said Mr. Dolan “that the probation officer’s report in this case is not favourable. But I would like to point out that a probation officer in making up his report accepts the views of persons not on oath. “These people may have a prejudice against the accused. If an individual has got to a high position in the world, they cannot speak too highly of him. On the other hand, if he meets with a reverse, there are often several individuals who can give him a kick to send him down.”
