HIGH HONOUR FOR JEWISH RABBI

FIFTY YEARS’ MINISTRY THE REV. VAN STAVEREN Press Association. WELLINGTON, To-day. The Rev. H. Van Staveren on Sat urday completed the fiftieth year of his ministry as Rabbi to the Jewish community of Wellington, which arranged a special testimonial to mark the occasion. Owing, however, to a bereavement in the Van Staveren family, this at present is being delivered privately. As a further recognition the Chief Rabbi of the British Empire, Dr. J. H. Hertz, has conferred on Mr. Van Staveren the title of “Morenu” or teacher (teachers being the priests of Israel). This title is the highest honour in the Hebrew faith and confers upon the bearer the right to decide all matters of right or wrong among his people.
