NEW SEASON MAIZE SELLING FORWARD
SPECULATORS LOSE ON ONIONS MARKETS REVIEWED New season’s maize from the Bay of Plenty has already arrived on the Auckland market. One or two small parcels came to hand during the week, but being on the soft side, it is only fit for immediate consumption and made about 6s 8d on the wharf. Gisborne merchants are now operating and forward contracts have been made for July, August and September delivery at values around 6s 6d on the wharf, Auckland. An attempt has been made lately to arrange for a shipment from Durban to arrive some time in September but, owing to insufficient orders, the idea has been abandoned meantime. Supplies locally are short, and the majority of the demand is being supplied with the reconditioned Javal cereal, which is of good quality and merchants’ ex-store quotations range from 8s Id to 8s 3d. Everything points to there being an acute shortage locally towards the end of the- month when the new season’s product can be expected to commence coming forward in ample supplies. crops are reported from down the Bay. POTATO STOCKS LOW Stocks of potatoes are very low on account of recent reduction in arrivals from the South. The Katoa tomorrow was expected to bring approximately 12,000 sacks, but later reports are to the effect that this has been reduced to about half. The shipment, however, will ease the position meantime. The recent firming in values in the South can be expected to reflect on the local market next week, when merchants’ quotations should advance 10s to £7 a ton ex-store. Reports from the South indicate that higher values will be asked for later deliveries owing to the disappointing yield in a number of Canterbury districts. CHAFF GIVES LITTLE CONCERN Chaff is giving little concern, and merchants’ quotations on the spot remain unaltered at £9 to £9 10s exstore. Southern quotations for later deliveries show a tendency to harden. Bran remains slow of sale, selling locally through store at £S ss. Pollard is meeting with a good demand at £ 10 10s. Southern wheat quotations remain stationary and local merchants are mostly buying from hand to mouth. Local through store quotations range from 7s 6d to 7s 9d. Owing to Australian inquiry, oats are decidedly firmer in the South. Several small contracts are reported to have been made for the Southern cereal by operators across the Tasman. On the spot through store quotations are: A Gartons, 4s 6d; B’s, 4s 2d. Onions are giving little concern, and the market still remains glutted. Ex the Moeraki next week the first shipment of Melbourne onions is due to come to hand. Contracted for early in the season at prices in the vicinity of ~6 a ton f.0.b., Melbourne, the shipment will represent a loss of about £3 a ton to speculators, when the new season s product can be expected to commence coming forward in ample sup-
