“SPOOFING” THE PUBLIC
QUALITY OF COMMODITIES (From Our Resident Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. The surreptitious operation of the evil genius in business is brought strikingly into illustration by Mr D O. Williams, M.A., who pointed out to members of the Economic Society that in many cases the elimination of price competition gives no guarantee of better quality. The competition In quality may simply be a competition in the arts of adulteration. Investigations into the modern development of deception were somewhat disquieting, and showed that the field of deception appeared tc be widening. Patent medicines, cosmetics, toe comforts and luxuries pf life so-called, were notoriously subject to this practice. But there were authenticated cases in other fields. In one recorded case a man bought for re-sale some roofing iron branded “second.” This small difficulty as to quality was overcome' by adding the words “to none”—“Second to none.”
