“SOCIAL WASTE”
TOO MANY LAND AGENTS AN ECONOMIST’S VIEWS (From Our Resident Reporter.) WELLINGTON. Friday. The function of the land agent Is called seriously into question by Mr D. O. Williams, M.A., lecturer in economics at Victoria University, who cites the fact that there are over 100 land agents in Wellington as an indication that the services of a profession are inclined to become wastefully elaborated. This army, he said, did the work that could be as well and much more cheaply done by a well-organised central bureau of information. This multiplicity of agents, with all the necessary elaboration of advertisement, motor-cars, and the like, was social waste. “In short,” he added, “service has been elaborated beyond the social optimum.”
