Raid on Bookmakers—Anxiety Among Some Wanganui Punters

FINES IMPOSED BY MAGISTRATE (Special to TUB SUN.) THERE were some anxious people in Wanganui yesterday when well-known business premises were raided on the suspicion that bookmaking was being carried on there.

As a result there was a large crowd in court this morning, when David Wilson and Charles Henry Byers pleaded guilty to keep their premises in the Avenue as a “common gaming house.” According to a statement by Detective Walsh, the accused were arrested yesterday afternoon. They car-

ried on an extensive bookmaking business. Apart from this both men possessed good characters and had not previously been before the court. Another matter favourable to the accused was the fact that they did not try to bolster up the position by lying. Fines of £75 were imposed in each case with costs.
