GARAGE ON FIRE
NEWMARKET BLAZE A GOOD SAVE LITTLE DAMAGE CAUSED A N outbreak of fire at Messrs. Harrison and Gash's Garage in Khyber Pass Road last evening was only prevented from developing into more serious proportions by prompt action on the part of the Newmarket Fire Brigade. Breaking out in the rear portion of the premises, the fire had gained a good hold before it was discovered. The alarm was given shortly before eight o’clock, and with the outbreak being within a hundred yards or so from the fire station, prompt action was possible. The brigade was early on the scene, finding on arrival that the flames, which had started in a furnace on the ground floor, had spread to the upper floor (which is used for coachbuilding purposes), and were breaking out through the roof. Leads were quickly brought into play, and within ten mintes the outbreak was under control. Due to the good work of the brigade, the only damage that resulted was to the furnace at the seat of the outbreak and one wall. A quantity of seasoned timber on the floor was only slightly charred, while two motor-cars were promptly removed before any damage was caused. “It was a very good save,” remarked one of the proprietors. He added that with so much inflammable material on hand a very destructive fire would have ensued had the outbreak not been so quickly subdued, particularly if the flames had spread to the adjoining garage, which was well stocked with cars and accessories. Stock and fittings in the portion of the building affected were insured in the National Insurance Company for A 4,750, and the premises for £2,700.
