WINTER RACING

THE AUCKLAND MEETING OPENED IN IDEAL WEATHER RECORD CROWD AT ELLERSLIE The winter meeting - of the Auckland Racing Club was opened at Ellerslie yesterday in glorious weather, and as a result there was a large attendance, a record for the day. The conditions overhead were ideal, and the course on the heavy side after the rains early in the week. Excellent racing was witnessed, that for the Great Northern Hurdles rousing the large crowd to enthusiasm, and the victory of Wedding March was very well received. Lomint took the Cornwall Handicap after a rare struggle with Llandudno, and with Waiau Lad and the consistent Town Guard also winning their events, three races were taken by Ellerslie-trained horses, so they did not fare too badly. SUBSTANTIAL TURNOVER The totalisator staff was kept busy throughout, with the result that a substantial in the investments was recorded, the margin being in the vicinity of 14 per cent —a striking illustration of tne popularity of the Great Northern meeting. Yesterday the machine put through .£92,707 IUS, as against £80,489 on the opening day oi tne last winter meeting, an increase of £12,218 lUs. Notes on yesterday’s racing, and details of later results, are as follow: Waiau Lad’s Surprise Prince Rufus was made a hot order In tne Green Lane Steeplechase, but he finished third. YVaioeKa Jack went out to set a warm pace, and over the double on the fiat the lirst time Waioeka Jack had a lead of ten lengths on Waiau Lad, who was just in advance of Rayo, Prince Rufus and Comical. The last-named chanced the next obstacle, the stone wall. Up the hill the second time Waioeka Jack was half-a-dozen lengths ahead of Waiau Lad, with Prince Rufus another three lengths away, clear of Comical and Rayo. The nrst fence on the hill this, the second time, saw Comical fall, anu Waioeka Jack .making a bad jump at the stone wall, let Waiau Lad up to him, with Prince Rufus and Rayo at intervals well back. Waiau Lact was lirst to the last fence, and he went on to win by three lengths from Waioeka Jack, who was seven lengths ahead of Px-ince Rufus. R. Morrison received slight injuries. The winner gave a double figure return. Town Guard’s Brilliance A couple of dozen contested the Jervois Handicap, and most money was entrusted to Tinokoa £940, Town Guard £873, Alonsoa £730, Saucy Lass £542, and Judge’s Box £494. At the start Miss Potoa got squeezed out, and lost whatever chance she had. Modest Boy was the first to find his feet, being quickly followed out of the barrier by Air Queen, Judge’s Box. Town Guard, Tinokoa, Killute, Creation and Adjuster. At the end of ar furlong and a-half Town Guard was clear, and was followed past the five furlongs by Air Queen, Creation, Tinokoa, Killute, Judge’s Box, Te Kawana, Charataine, Luxurious, Rina Mangu, Fiery Lad and Alonsoa. Town Guard held his advantage to the straight, his nearest attendants being Creation, Tinokoa, Arch Queen, Modest Boy. Luxurious, Alonsoa, Killute, Adjuster and Rina Mangu. In the run up to the judge Town Guard was bowling along nicely in the van, and Tinokoa was the first to tackle him. The favourite appeared to range up with the leader at the furlong, but he could not go on with it. and it was left to Modest Boy, who had a clear run on the rails, to make a fight of it, an exciting finish resulting in favour of Town Guard by half a head. Tinokoa was three lengths away third, and another four lengths back was Alonsoa. Then came Killute, Star Comet, Luxurious, Anola. Rina Mangu, Acushla and Fiery Lad. Glenidle’s Hurdles Anchor £2,216, Enare £1,961, Slump £1,361 and Glenidle £1,336 were best backed in the Penrose Hurdles. Wiltshire lost a few lengths at the start, and running to the first fence Golden Glass, Rahepoto and Bretland were in a line, the last-named falling here, and Comet King, Glenidle and Anchor being next. Passing the stands the first time Rahepoto held charge from Golden Glass, Lady Arch, Comet King, Blue Sky, Glenidle, Anchor, Scot Free, Slump and Enare. At the five furlongs Comet King fell. Rahepoto led across the top and into the straight, being followed at intervals by Slump, Golden Glass, Glenidle, Blue Sky, Enare, Lady Arch and Anchor. Rahepoto and Glenidle fought out the finish, the latter prevailing by a neck, with Slump two and a-half lengths away third. Then came Golden Glass, Blue Sky, Enare, Scot Free, Anchor and Lady Arch. Wedding March Triumphs The scratching of Dick, Passin’ Through and Karamu left a field of a dozen in the Great Northern Hurdles, and a well-conditioned lot they were. There was a spirited duel for favouritism between the bracket, Zircon and Royal Form, and Kawini, the two combinations finally being entrusted with £3.272 and £3,329 respectively. Others well backed were Wedding March, £2,254.; Day Bell, £2,003: Archibald. £1,407; and Maunga, £978. Day Bell acted as pacemaker past the post the first time, being followed by Archibald, Royal Form, Wedding March. Zircon, Royal Abbey, Kamehameha. Mount Marta, Kawini, Rangatahi, Glenotus and Maunga. There was little change along the back, but coming up the straight the second time Zircon, Royal Form and Mount Marta were running in a line, three lengths in advance of Archibald, with Wedding March, Day Bell, Kawini, Rangatahi. Kamehameha, Maunga, Glenotus and Royal Abbey. At the five furlongs Archibald took charge, being closely followed by Zircon, Royal Form, Mount Marta, Day Bell, Kawini and Wedding March, this bunch being well clear of the remainder. At the half-mile Kawini ran up to Archibald, but in the next furlong Archibald drew away again and showed the way into the straight from Wedding March and Kawini. these being the only horses with a show. Pay Bell, Mount Marta, Zircon, Royal Form. Maunga. Glenotus and Rangatahi followed at intervals. Over the final obstacle Archibald and Wedding March were practically level, the latter finishing too strong for the Ellerslie representative, and won by three lengths. Day Bell was a similar distance away, and then the next to finish were Maunga, Kawini (who blundered badly at the last fence), Zircon. Roj-al Abbey, Mount Marta, Royal Form and Glenotus. One for Ellerslie The withdrawal of King Smock and Danae left a field of 18 in the Cornwall Handicap, the order of the betting being Degage £2,548, Bennanee £2,236, Te Kara £1,021, Black Mint £1,009 and Royal Mint £967. Passionate got left at the start, and Te Kara also got away badly. Racing past the post and out of the straight the order was Master Doon and Llandudno, just ahead of King Merv, Quincoma, Bennanee, Lomint, Queen Arch, Te Kara, Black Mint, Lord Star, Ngata, Royal Mint and Gold Jacket. Running to the five furlongs the order was Llandudno, Black Mint, King Merv, Quincoma, Master Doon, Te Kara and Degage. There was little change a furlong further on, and into the straight Llandudno had half a length advantage over Lomint, Quin-

coma two and a-half lengths further back, and then coming Te Kara, Black Mint, King Merv, Master Doon, Yoma, Bennanee, Queen Arch and Degage. At the furlong peg Lomint and Llandudno were on terms, Master Doon being next three lengths further back. Te Kara being another length and ahalf away. Lomint finished a bit too strong for Llandudno and beat him by a neck, with Master Doon three lengths away third. Te Kara was next, and was followed home by Royal Mint. Ngata, Yoma, Queen Arch, Bennanee, Passionate and Degage. Favourite Scores All started in the Hunters’ Hurdles, the money being put on Just John £2,149, Bahadur £1,999, Pendavies £1,373, and I-lazelburn £833. Fair Abbey led all the early stages, being attended past the stands the lirst time by Ramblin’ Kid, Pendavies, Memsahib, Clockwork. Syndicate, Mangani and Bahadur. At the five furlongs Fair Abbey, Ramlin’ Kid and Pendavies were almost on terms, their nearest attendants being Memsahib, Just John, Clockwork, Mangani, Lupineel and Glendowie. As they came into the home stretch Ramlin’ Kid had a slight advantage over Fair Abbey, with Just John coming fast, next in order being Pendavies, Mangani and Lupineel. A furlong from home Just John was up with Ramlin’ Kid, and finally beat him by a length. Fair Abbey was ten lengths away third, and then came Glendowie and Lupineel together, and at intervals Mangani. Syndicate, Pendavies and Clockwork. Delightment’s Sprint

A dozen contested the first division of the Members’ Handicap, and in a good pool the favoured division were Nadarino £2,777, Sun Up £2,730, Delightment £2,016, and Kingfield £1,964. Subdivision dwelt and lost ground at the barrier rise, Kingfield, on the rails, streaking away to the front from Ballymoy 11., Gala Day Royal Blood, Sun Up, Delightment’, Subdivision, Automne, Nadarino and Potoanui, this being the order at the end of the first furlong. At the halfmile there was a bunch in the van comprising Kingfield, Royal Blood! Ballymoy 11., and Gala Day, Suddivision heading the others. Royal Blood showed the way into the straight from Kingfield, Gala Day, Nadarino, Delightment and Sun Up, the lastmentioned being on the outer. In the run to the judge Delightment shot through on the rails, and went on to win rather easily by a couple of lengths from Sun Up, who had to cover a good deal more ground after being badly drawn at the barrier. Kingfield was another two lengths away third, and then came Gala Day, Nadarino, Roval BJood, Potoanui, Automne and Subdivision. Last to King Lu The money- poured in for Hoariri in the second division of the Members’ Handicap, and he finallv carried £3,283, as against £2,159 on King Lu, £1,329 on Archeno, and £1,253 on Y ork Abbey. A walk-up start saw York Abbey jump to the front from Archeno, but when they had settled down Sir Archie had taken charge from King Lu, and he led past the _ GOLF,

half mile from Hoariri. Antrim Boy, King Lu, Archeno and York Abbey. Into the straight Sir Archie had a slight lead over the favourite, next being King Lu, Antrim Boy, Archeno, and York Abbey. At the distance the favourite looked like winning, when King Lu swooped down on him, and finally won by two lengths. Hoariri ran about a lot at the end, and was only able to keep going to secure second money by half a length from Sir Archie. Barometer was a good fourth, and the next were Te Koroke, Archeno and High Pitch, with Arch Amie last. Additional results: HUNT CLUB HURDLES Of 500 sovs.; 2 miles. 1— JUST JOHN (J.
