REDUCTION IN PUBLIC WORKS FUND EXPENSE

INTERESTING FIGURES BIG MAIN HIGHWAYS FUND New Zealand borrowed £5.443,063 ior the Public Works Fund during the year, states the “Gazette.” This is an increase of £258.131 on teh previous financial year. The reduction in the net expenditure of the fund is shown as £525.095. On March 31 a balance of £1,115.243 remained in the general purposes account. the aid to water-power works and electrical supply account, and the Waihou and Ohinemuri Rivers improvement account. Last year the balance in these three accounts was £ 656.243. This year it is £1.115.243. The principal items of expenditure in the general purposes account are as follow, with comparisons with last year:—

Expenditure on the development of water-power shows an increase of £184,454, and on the Waihou and Ohinemuri Rivers account an increase of £17,948. There has been a decline in the expenditure on educatii pf £.13,997, and on the Railways Improvement Authorisation Act for the reconstruction of railways in operation a decrease of £3.570. MAIN HIGHWAYS In the Main Highways Fund there has been an increase in the construction fund of £127,193. Last year the total expenditure was £422,456; this year, £ 549,649. During the year. £400,000 was transferred to the fund from the Public Works Fund, and £IOO,OOO was raised by the issue of debentures. The net receipts which were issued into the maintenance fund account were £656,015, the principal items being £ 35,000 from the Consolidated Fund, £190,575 from the duty on motor tyres, £395,797 from fees and fines under the Motor Vehicles Act, and £34,614 from the interest in investments. There was a large increase in expenditure for maintenance, the figures being—this year, £529,430; last year, £ 251.965. The balance -remaining at the end of March was £752,939.
