PAINLEVE’S VISION

TRANSATLANTIC AIRPLANES ISLANDS ON THE WAY By Cable. —Press Association. —Copyright PARIS, Thursday. “Engineers must build islands in the Atlantic before a regular passenger service by airplanes will be possible,” said M. Painleve, Minister of War. “These islands will have to be equipped with wireless stations, repair shops and hangars for use during storms. Passenger airplanes using floating islands will come along before armies send out airplanes from Europe to fly across the Atlantic for war purposes, as bombers would have to return to Europe without landing. “The transatlantic airplane will be multi-motored and multi-planed. Jt will fly at heights unknown at present and will cross from Paris to New York in 24 hours. In order to be effective it must carry 10 times its weight in passengers and goods.”—A. and N.Z.
