Chatham Cup Prospects
Who’ll Survive To-morrow?
Attractive Programme at Blandford Park
THBEE knock-out competitions to-morrow will conclude the first eliminating round of the Chatham Cup contest and some exciting “Cup Tie” football is certain. Every team is keen on being Auckland’s survivor for the next stage and defeat means “sudden death” in the national contest.
J>OTH the unbeaten Thistle eleven and the North Shore team, who have only suffered one narrow defeat, will be seen in action at Blandford Park, Thistle having drawn Y.M.C.A. for the preliminary game, while Shore meet Tramways far the big game. Royal Navy will jotirney to Onehunga to settle their issue with the local eleven. THISTLE V. Y.M.C.A. Although the' Scotchmen have not yet tasted defeat they will not be able to take things easy against the Young Men. In last year’s Chatham Cup contest the “Trammies” were in the same proud position that Thistle hold to-day, but it was the same Y.M. which upset the pot and settled the Trammies ambitions for the national club trophy. In their last two games the Y.M. have shown great fighting form. With only ten men for the great part of the game they ran the Trams to a goal difference at the finish, and last Saturday they were unlucky in having to share the points with the Ponies after haying secured a two-goal lead. But Thistle are a great combination with
not a weak spot in the side, and unless the unexpected happens in the hurlyburly of a knockout contest, the Scots should pass on to the next round. NORTH SHORE V. TRAMWAYS The principal game is sure to provide a thrilling struggle, as the Trammies are anxious to make amends for their unexpected failures in the championship series. Individually the corporation team is good enough to knock out any of the opposing clubs. Their defence is very solid and difficult to penetrate, while in Spencer and Dodds they have two of the most dangerous scoring forwards in Auckland. The trouble has been to fill the pivot position at centre half, where the burly Ivissock used to hold the team together in both defence and attack in his own impressive style. North Shore have lost the services of Bradshaw, who is suffering from severe leg trouble, while Baxter has been a “sick bay” case at the depot since his game against his shipmates last week. The popular C.P.O. is hopeful of a recovery for tomorrow’s game, but Shore may have to call on yet another of their young reserves. When Shore last niet the Trams an exciting contest ended in victory for the black-and-golds by 3 goals to 2, and to-morfow’s tie may be equally close. The dashing goahead tactics of the Shore colts should be admirably suited, to cup tie conditions, and they have shown a staying power superior to any team in the senior ranks. Although Thistle triumphed over them by the odd goal, the Shore lads had all the best of the second half, and have only to reproduce their previous form to put paid to Tramway’s account. ROYAL NAVY V. ONEHUNGA The naval brigade will voyage to Onehunga to meet the local eleven, and are hopeful of returning home the winners. It would be a x proud day if the Navy men could win the handsome cup presented by the former flagship of the New Zealand station, and Onehunga will find it hard to keep them at bay. Unfortunately the service men have had difficulty in keeping a team together, and some of the players are not displaying the esprit-de-corps usually associated with the boys of the bulldog breed. The sports officer is keen on maintaining the traditions and standard of the Navy team, which was SLich a great asset in developing the popularity of Soccer a few years back, and a win for the “lily whites” tomorrow would be a popular victory Onehunga have a very solid defence and they are not easy to knock out on their home ground, but the forward line is not strong, and Navy’s superiority in a scoring capacity should turn the scale in their favour.

forward line and pay more attention to combination, there is every possibility that they will turn the tables on their opponents. St. Luke’s are certainly stayers and, though rather weak in the forward line, possess one or two fine players. They have a formidable defence which presented a tough proposition even to Somerville. They are fielding the same combination as last week. ARETA V. MT. EDEN At the beginning of the season Mount Eden had no difficulty in putting up a score of 3 —l against Areta. The blacks were in a disorganised state when they were drawn against Eden two months ago, but since then the side has evolved a powerful combination, so that to-morrow’s encounter will prove a different story. The moral effect of downing Varsity and drawing with St. Luke’s has acted as a stimulus to Areta, which has now come to the fore in senior hockey. However, Eden is not to be taken lightly. The van, with Penman, Postles and Jansen in form, is a determined attacking force when adequately supported by the rear departments. If Toovey, Surman "and Vail are up to the mark Areta will have a lot of hard work to get in Eden’s circle. This battle should be an open engagement characterised by dashing forward play on both sides. On paper it looks as though Areta will just about pull things off.
