SIXTY-TWO TO-DAY

KING GEORGE THE FIFTH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED PERFECT WEATHER CONDITIONS Auckland is to-day celebrating the i King’s birthday, and to a large percentage of people it is just a holiday. Only a small number could say offhand how old the King is. In point of fact, he was born at Marlborough. House on June 3, 1855, and is 62 years of age. George V. is the only surviving son of his late Majesty King Edward VII., and his elder brother, Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence, born on January 8, 1864, died on January 14, 1892, by virtue of which our present King came to the throne. He succeeded to the Throne on May 6, 1910, and was crowned at Westminster Abbey on June 22, 1911. Our present Queen was born on May 26, 1867, and is two years younger than the King, within a few days. The Royal marriage was in July, 1893. King Edward VII. died at the age of 71, having been King for nine years, and Queen Victoria, after reigning for 64 years, died at the age of 82. HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS .Tire holiday in celebration of the birthday is seeing brilliant weather conditions, the frosty night having preceded a day of bright sunshine—one of Auckland’s finest winter days. The principal attraction out of doors is the first day of the Auckland Racing Club’s winter meeting at Ellerslie, the chief event being the Great Northern Hurdles. Saturday and Wednesday will see the continuation of the meeting. A comprehensive programme of sports is being played. All the golf links are seeing special fixtures lasting over the whole day. Hockey players are engaging in a seven-a-side tournament. All tire bowling greens are engaged with tournaments. League footballers have Devonport against Richmond, at Carlaw Park. A few Association players have matches, and a Rugby tournament is being played by the Presbyterian Bible Class.
