CAM YOUR BEAT THIS?

OLD IRONSIDES MODEL ENTRIES CLOSE IN A MONTH THE picture reproduced above is of the prize-winning model in the Sydney “Old Ironsides” Competition. We are certain that Auckland boys can do better than this ship which has some obvious faults. The bowsprit is tilted up too high and the rigging is not perfect.

Boy readers of THE SUN are taking a keen interest in the “Old Ironsides” model boat building contest, judging by the numerous inquiries received. In order to assist contestants as much as possible, the “Old Ironsides” Contest editor would like to hear from any of the boys who may perhaps benefit by his advice and assistance. Boys are reminded that an exact model of “Old Ironsides” is not expected from them, although the correct plans of that vessel have already been published, as it is realised that to build such a model would require more than average skill. Entries built to the general idea of the specifications will be judged on their merits. This will enable boys to use their imagination and be more interesting to them than if they were expected to slavishly follow the plans already published. Prizes of £lO and £5 are offered for the two best models received. They will be used by Paramount Pictures for display purposes with the screening of the Paramount picture, “Old

Ironsides,” in Auckland in the near future. The closing date of the contest is June 30, but entries may be brought to the “Old Ironsides” Contest Editor, care of THE SUN, as soon as they are completed. The picture, “Old Ironsides,” tells the story of the “Constitution” and the “Philadelphia,” two of six vessels built by America about the year 1794, to protect her commence from the Tripoliton pirates. The “Constitution” is “Old Ironsides,” and her warlike exploits make a thrilling picture ending with the capture of the forts at Tripoli. The competition is open to boys up to 16 years of age. Model builders are invited to apply to “Old Ironsides” Contest Editor, THE SUN, for further information about the ship. Please fill in this coupon and send it to the Contest Editor if you intend to submit a model:
