TWO TITLE FIGHTS

WELTER AND MIDDLE BOUTS FOR JUNE (From Our Resident Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Permits for two title fights have been granted by the New Zealand Boxing Council. Dick Loveridge is to fight Artie Hay for the welter-weight title at Hamilton on June 27, and Harry Casey will meet Lackie McDonald at Wellington on June 20 for the middleweight title. Loveridge and Hay have met twice. On the first occasion Loveridge, who had previously won the title from Clarrie Blackburn, outpointed Hay, and in the second Hay received the referee’s nod. Casey in reality belongs to the welter class, and a short time ago offered to fight Purdy at 9.9 for the lightweight title. It is obvious therefore that he will be giving away a good deal of weight to the holder of the title. Casey is a Queenslander who about five months ago fulfilled his residential qualifications to fight for a New Zealand title.

McDonald won this title from Eddie Parker three years ago, and he and Casey have met three times. Their first meeting resulted in McDonald getting the decision on a foul, in the second a points’ verdict went to Casey, and the third meeting saw a reversal of this.
