PROMISING MAIDEN
Usually the Fordell stable presided over by Fred Tilley serves up something extra good at the Otaki meetings. In the past some of the good handicap performers he has prepared have made their initial bow at Otaki—a course noted even more than Elierslie for its mud. To-morrow the trainer referred to has two horses entered. The erratic SHINING ARMOUR is in the principalevent, and it may be worth remembering that he runs well on this track. But it is for his second string that backers will be particularly interested. This is the three-year-,old AVRO, a gelding by Warplane who appears to be possessed of pace to burn. At Wanganui last Saturday week Avro was given his first race in the hack sprint, eventually won by Nastori. In that race Avro stood on the mark at barrier rise and lost a fair bit of ground. In finishing up a close fifth in pretty fair hack company Avro did remarkably well, and a repetition of that burst of speed in the Maiden at Otaki to-morrow will give the opposition something to think about.
